Finger-Jointed Radiata Pine

H3.2 treated for frames

While not as exotic, finger-jointed pine plays a practical, cost-effective role, especially in frame and structural elements that are less exposed. For painted joinery frames, we use H3.2 treated finger-jointed pine. This engineered timber combines affordability with reliability, making it a strong choice for cost-conscious projects.

Why we use it

  • Cost efficiency:
    Radiata is local and economical.

  • Strength and stability:
Finger-joint lamination improves dimensional stability and reduces warping or twisting.

  • Good painted surface:
With proper priming and finishing, finger-jointed pine provides a smooth, paintable substrate.

  • Appropriate for protected zones:
Ideal for frames, internal components, or joinery not directly exposed to severe weather.

Limitations & required care

  • It's not naturally durable, so it must be treated (e.g. H3.2 preservative) or used in lower-risk exposure zones.

  • Finish and maintenance are critical; any exposed end grain or cut lines must be sealed and repainted.

  • Avoid use where full weather exposure demands the higher performance of Accoya or cedar.
