Abodo

Thermally Modified & Naturally Durable Woods

Abodo is a brand that focuses on thermally modified radiata pine and other durable species, positioning themselves as a high-performance, sustainable alternative. Their “Vulcan” range, for example, undergoes thermal treatment and has been field-tested extensively. Abodo+1

Key strengths of Abodo / Vulcan modified timber

  • Tested durability:
Accelerated decay research shows Vulcan performs on par with or better than H3.2 treated radiata, and surpasses old-growth cedar in some cases. Abodo

  • Sustainably processed:
Thermal modification avoids toxic chemical treatments, aligning with green building objectives.

  • Proven field performance:
Abodo runs field trials in NZ (and at SCION) to check long-term behavior under local environmental conditions. Abodo+1

  • Local heartwood durability knowledge:
Abodo discusses NZ-grown species’ heartwood durability and how thermally modifying sapwood can improve resilience. Abodo

Role in joinery

Abodo-modified timber is a strong candidate for joinery mid-tier exposure, where you want better durability than untreated softwoods, but can’t always justify full Accoya. Use it in moderately exposed windows, doors, or frames with robust coatings.
